Explanationedit
Strain expresses the magnitude of deformation caused due to the stress in a system due to the applied load or force. It is denoted by e. The strain of a rod subjected to a stress is simply the ratio of the deformed length l to it original length L. Strain, e = l/L, is a dimensionless number that is usually expressed in percentages.
